Hands checkpoint
Hand setting is the step that makes many first-time builders nervous, and fairly so. The parts are tiny, the seconds hand is unforgiving, and a small bend can stop the watch.
Assemble can help you plan the right hand sizes and spot clearance risks. The actual technique is worth learning from visual tutorials before you touch the movement.

What to check before ordering
- Buy hands listed for the movement family, usually NH35, NH36, NH38, or NH34.
- Check hand length against the dial markers. The minute and seconds hands should reach the track without scraping the chapter ring.
- Check clearance from the side before closing the case. Hands must clear the dial, each other, and the underside of the crystal.
Common ways this goes wrong
- Pressing the hour hand too low and making it scrape the dial or markers.
- Setting the seconds hand off-level and bending the post.
- Closing the case before rotating the hands through a full 12-hour check.

Frequently asked questions
Is hand setting the hardest part of a Seiko mod?
For many beginners, yes. It is not conceptually complicated, but the seconds hand is small and easy to bend.
How do I know if my hands are binding?
Advance the hands through 12 hours and watch from the side. If they touch each other, the dial, the markers, or the crystal, the movement may stop or lose time.
Should I reuse old hands?
Usually no for a first build. Old hand tubes can stretch during removal, and fresh NH-compatible hands are less frustrating.
