The NH35 is the movement that most Seiko mods are built around. If you're planning your first serious build, there's a good chance an NH35 is already on your list.

There are plenty of dials listed as NH35-compatible. Most of them are fine. These are the three I'd actually recommend.

Dial styles worth knowing

If none of those hit right, here's how to think about what you're actually looking for:

Sunburst

A brushed radial finish that catches light differently at every angle. Silver and blue are the most popular colorways. Looks clean on a sport case, dressier on a slim one. Widely available and usually the best value entry point.

Fauxtina

A cream or off-white base with an aged lume application, designed to mimic vintage patina without waiting 40 years. Hugely popular for vintage-inspired builds. Pairs best with warm-toned hands (gold, beige, or aged lume). The name is a portmanteau of 'faux' and 'patina'.

Explorer / Minimalist

Clean white or black dial with minimal text, often featuring 3-6-9 or just indices. Inspired by mid-century tool watches. The appeal is timelessness. Works with almost any handset.

Galaxy / Meteorite

Dials with a genuine meteorite or highly textured surface. More niche, much more of a statement. Usually pairs with a sport case and a simple bracelet to let the dial do the talking.

Fauxtina

Vintage-inspired dials with aged lume plots. Pair with gold or patina-finished hands for the full effect.

What to look for when buying

If you want the technical fitment version before choosing a style, start with the NH35 compatible dials reference.

  • 1Look for listings that explicitly state NH35, SKX, or 5KX compatibility, not just 'Seiko compatible'.
  • 2Prefer vendors who list the dial diameter in the product description. Transparency on specs is a good signal for overall quality.
  • 3For fauxtina dials, check the lume plots closely in the product photos. Inconsistent lume is a known issue with cheaper options.
  • 4Sunburst dials photograph dramatically but look subtler in person. If you want the effect to read clearly, go for a strong color (blue, green) rather than silver.
  • 5For bespoke or independent makers: check their social media or community posts for real build photos, not just product renders. Finished builds tell you more than a product listing.
